The twenty-ninth birthday of the Emperor Hirohito of Japan falls today. •
Mr R. E. Hunter has been appointed Deputy-Registrar of Births and Deaths at Ohaupo.
Mr A. C. Hanlon, of Dunedin, was sworn in as King’s Counsel by Mr Justice Kennedy to-day.
Mr J. W. Chapman is gazetted as having been elected a trustee of the Woodlands drainage district.
Mr S. Parkerson, of Auckland, who has been on a visit, to Matamata, has returned home.
Mr D. Finlayson, of the Bank of New Zealand, Matamata, has been transferred to Auckland.
Rev. E. T. Olds, formerly of Hamilton East, commenced his duties as minister in charge of the Methodist Central Mission in Auckland yesterday.
Admiral Kato, chief of the Japanese Naval Staff, announces his resignation. He contends that the naval strength provided by the London treaty is Insufficient for the defence of Japan.
Sir Henry F. Wigram, of Christchurch, was a passenger for England by the Rangitiki, which left Wellington on Saturday.
The Rev. Dr. J. T. Pinfold, secretary of the Wellington Ministers’ Association, left Wellington by the Rangitiki on Saturday for a holiday in England.
Mr W. Lee Martin, M.P., for Raglan, returned this morning from Wellington, where he had been attending the Labour Conference and to matters concerning his constituency.
Dr. Samuel Pritchard Matheson, Primate of All Canada for 21 years, who retired from that position in 1928, but who continued as Archbishop of Rupert’s Land, has announced his retirement.
Mr K. S. Williams, M.P., who has been a patient in an Auckland hospital for the past month with an injury to the leg which he received in a fall while on.a deep-sea fishing trip in the North, is convalescent.
Messrs E. Wilkins, E- S. Clarke, C. Wheeler (Auckland), W. Anderson, R. Stewart (Wellington), T. Hurley, S. H. Lovegrove (Wanganui), J. D. Vernon (Te Kuiti), and W. D. Fleming (Waipukurau), are at the Hamilton Hotel.
Sir Henry Pollock, unofficial member of the. Hongkong Executive Council, was removed from the liner Empress of Russia and taken to hospital on arrival at Vancouver on Saturday. He is suffering from pneumonia contracted during the voyage, and his condition is serious.
Flying Officer H. L- Piper spent the * week-end at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, where he investigated the possibility of forming a landingground for planes. He will return to Christchurch early this week, and will then fly his Desoutter monoplane, in which he made the flight from England to Australia, to Dunedin.
The Australian Minister of Trade and Customs, Mr J. E. Fenton, who was a delegate to the Naval Conference, departed by the Aquitania from London on Saturday. Many persons bade-him farewell at Waterloo station, including Mr H. Trumble, representing the High Commissioner, Sir Granville Ryrie, and representatives of the Prime Minitser and the Dominions Office.
