CLEANING WITH PETROL
The following is a practical method of cleanning at home hats and all articles which would be spoiled or shrunk by water, or those which present great difficulty in the ironing after being washed in the ordinary way. It is done .with petrol, the quantity required being determined by the size and bulk of the article to be cleaned. Half a gallon, which costs about Is, suffices for an average sized frock of quite heavy material. It is, of course, imperative that the petrol should be kept right away from all light and heat.
See that the article Is perfectly dry before commencing the cleaning, if there are any particularly bad stains it is a wise plan to surround them by a tacking of contrasting cotton, otherwise they may be overlooked when the article is immersed in the petrol. Place the article in a bowl, and pour the petrol all over it. After allowing it to stand for some 15 minutes rub gently with the hands, or, belter still, with a soft brush, paying special attention to the marked spots. When finished squeeze out some of the petrol; this must be done very lightly to avoid creasing. Hang out on a clothes hanger and when perfectly dry iron—away from the fire—with a fairly hot iron. The ironing is easy, for petrol does not crumple the material as water does. Before wearing it is best to leave the article 1 hanging for a few days in an open spot to allow the smell of the petrol to disappear.
