DOMINION POLITICS.

PARNELL BY-ELECTION. MR ENDEAN’S CANDIDATURE. CONFIRMED BY LEADER. AUCKLAND, Monday. The selection of Mr W. P. Endean as Reform candidate in the Parnell byelection has been confirmed by the Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who announced his approval in a statement, issued last evening. “ I have no hesitation in endorsing the selection,” said Mr Coates, "and I am confident that Mr Endean will champion the cause of Reform in such a manner as will secure the utmost confidence of electors and do credit to our party." “In endorsing the excellent choice made by the delegates, l fell bound to express my appreciation of the public spirit that was shown by Mr 11. K. Jenkins in submitting his name for selection, thereby, as the event proved, losing the right to stand as the Reform candidate. This is in line with the straightforward and bold course he had taken earlier, upon finding himself in an untenable position as a member of a party which did not measure up to his idea of what was in the Dominion’s best interests. “ Here also I feel I can make some special reference to my old friend and ally, Mr J. S. Dickson, who has a long and loyal record of 17 years as a member of Parliament, for nine of which he filled the posilion of senior Reform whip. No one in .the House during those years worked with greater zeal and honesty of purpose than Mr Dickson.

•“ Rivalry in any contest is always fraught with dangerous possibilities if I lie contestants are not imbued with the highest principles of patriotism and loyally and I am gratified to know that Mr Endean was assured after the selection of the fullest supports in his candidature by his erstwhile competitors for preference. I extend my heartiest thanks to all the aspirants and to the many supporters who helped to make the selection meetings successful; also the electorate executive and divisional head-quarters. " I hope and believe that their efforts will result in the return of Mr Endean for Parnell.”

An assurance of his cordial support and active co-operation in the candidature of Mr Endean was also expressed last evening by Mr Dickson. He state'll that lie .would devote all his time and efforts until the completion of the campaign in assisting to secure the success of Mr Endean’s cause.
