When washing .faded cretonne a cupful of vinegar in the rinsing water will help to brighten the colours. A narrow piece of tape sewn round tiie corners of new sheets and tablecloths preserves the .hems when laundered. Small pieces of kid or wash-leather sewn beneath big buttons prevent them from being torn out and leaving Holes in the garment. Delicate shades in cotton materials may be kept from fading by using plenty of pulverised pure borax in the washing and rinsing waters. A piece of horse-radish placed in a jar of pickles will keep the vinegar from losing its strength. The pickles will not become soft or mouldy. The old sunburn make-up is out of fashion in London and abroad, though it may return in the summer. At the moment pale faces are fashionable. An authority states that it is just, as bad to use too much grease on the face as not enough, because grease makes the skin flabby and encourages a double chin. Tortoise-shell and enamel have reigned supreme for dressing rase fittings and dressing table appointments for a long time now. Ivory is coming into its own again.
