A COMMUNITY CHEST.

aid to wayfarers. TE AWAMUTU PROPOSAL. There was not a large attendance at the meeting of business men and ministers of religion, convened by the Mayor .of Te Awamutu to consider the desirability of creating a “ community chest ” from which to provide sustenance for indigent wayfarers. Mr Downes said some local people had been frequently importuned foxmonetary assistance or for meals. The position had got so bad that some concerted move was advisable. The position, he thought, would become worse, as the coming winter months would almost certainly see a large number of wayfarers in Te Awamutu distinct. Sir Mairs thought there was some •misunderstanding among a section of the business men, who felt that there was a need for concerted action in determining a course of action in respect to the continual soliciting for cash and trophies for picnics, sports, etc., all over the district. The Mayor thought the two matters ■should not be treated as identical. The matter referred to by Mr Mairs would be more one for action by the Retailers’ Committee, in Auckland a community chest was operated under the direction of Rev. Jasper Calder, and was heartily supported by the business community. That eliminated imposition and duplication, and generally was a much more effective method of assisting the deserving needy and discouraging the “ spongers.” Rev. Butterworth said the idea of a “ community chest ” for Te Awamutu originated with Rev. R. H. Trill, who suggested a voluntary chest administered by one man. The local police had rather approved the idea, and had offered to co-operate. It was decided that a community ohest he established. It was decided to canvass the business people, invite contributions from all sources, apply to churches for help, and ask the Orphans’ Club to promote a concert. Several speakex's referred to the sympathetic attitude taken by the local police, and expressed a desire that they be asked to administer the fund. This Q was agreed to.
