REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD.
HONOURED AT WELLINGTON. A FLAG RETURNED. ' (Ky Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A New Zealand flag carried by RearAdmiral Byrd ; on his flight over the South Pole was relurned to the Government by the explorer at a Ministerial luficheon accorded him to-day. The combination of the American and New Zealand flags in the table decoration scheme was noted by the admiral. “ I have been looking, ’ he said, "at the two flags together on the table, ours and yours. That is how they should he. As far as civilisation and humanity are concerned we have the same common interests. I Lake this opportunity of heartily reciprocating the sentiments of goodwill which have been expressed.” After the toasts of the King and the President of tlie- United Stales had been honoured, Mr Forbes proposed that of Admiral Byrd. The Minister asked Admiral Byrd on his return to America to act as an ununofficial ambassador for New Zealand, and to convey to the President and the people of the United States New Zealand’s best wishes for their future prosperity.
