WHITE FELT CLEANER

Petrol is the best cleanser for a white felt hat that has become greasy or soiled; but the rubbing should be confined to the grease spots. After petrol has been applied, and softly rubbed so as not to make the felt too furry, some white powdered magnesia or cloth ball should be gently applied ail over the hat and afterwards brushed off. When white felt became sp fashionable (writes a correspondent), I had a hat that I had discarded. It was shabby, but by cleaning it by the method given, cutting it down to the new shape, and pressing it with a cool iron, I managed to make it look quite fashionable. However, extreme care must be exercised in the pressing, for too much heat shrinks felt beyond recognition. Another method of cleaning is to steam the felt, and then gently go over it with fine sandpaper.
