ACCEPTANCES DUE 5 P.M. FRIDAY. . The Autumn meeting of the Waikato Racing Club, which will be held i at the Club's course at Te Rapa on i Saturday, April 12, and Monday, April 1-i, promises io attract strong fields and a big attendance of patrons. Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the first day’s racing wifi close at 5 p.m. on Friday next, with the secretary (Mr E. il. | O’Meara), at Hamilton, or with Messrs i

Blomllcld and Go., Auckland. NOTES' AND COMMENTS. THE WHANGAREI MEETING. The Whangarei Racing Club will hold its Autumn meeting on Thursday and Saturday. Useful Helds have met the acceptance for opening day and indications point to the Northern Club having a very successful gathering. Paganelli has returned to his headquarters at M. J. Carroll’s stables at Franldon, after his racing at the Wellington and Manawatu meetings. The Lord Quex —Ringdove gelding, who is in excellent order, has been nominated for the sprint event on the concluding day of the Waikato Club’s Autumn meeting and may be a starter at local headquarters on April 14. Gold Lily, who figures at the minimum in the Settlers’ Handicap at J Whangarei on Thursday, displayed some speed in her races on occasions during the past couple of seasons. The Catmint —Delpecn filly lias been on the winning list Ibis season and in this company she promises to be capable of a useful effort with her handy Impost. It transpires that Elicit was jumped on during the running of tire hurdle race on the second day of the Manawatu meeting. Despite this, lie ran a very close second and hut for the mishap would probably have won. lie lias a badly stripped liock to show as a result of trouble, and it will be a pity if it keeps him off the scene for any lengthy period.

Principal, who is an acceptor in the Trial 'Stakes at Whangarei on Thursday, is likely to come in for solid support. The Thespian—-Royal Exchange gelding ran secoDd to Chromadyne in the Novice Handicap at Pacroa last month. He did not leave the barrier too promptly on that occasion and there was some merit in the effort of this member of G. Hodge’s team at Takanini.

The local trainer, M. J. Carroll, left yesterday for the Whangarei meeting with 'Tasty, I’m Alone and Glena Bay. The former, who is engaged in the Trial Stakes on Thursday, has not had a race since the spring, when her form was not good. I’m Alone was on the winning list, at the Franklin meeting. The Lord Quex —Bayonne gelding figures in Ihe Portland Hack Handicap, a six furlong event on 'Thursday, while Ciena Bay, who also scored at the Franklin fixture, is an acceptor for the hurdles and the Waipu Handicap on the first day.

Ceremony should not be long in getting on to the winning list again. lie ran a good race in the handicap the first day of the Manawalu meeting, and had he not lost his place in the running in Ihe Stakes the second day lie would probably have been close lo the money, despite the very tight finish between Cimabuc. Toxeuma and Paganelli. Ceremony will most likely "be at Auckland for Easter.

Desert Glow is to have his next start in the Mclnncs Memorial Handicap at Whangarei on Thursday. The Day Gomel—Lady Winsome gelding came hack to form at the Ohinemuri meeting last month, where lie wo;i the Gup (eleven furlongs), with 7.10. and ran third in the Shaw Memorial Handicap (one mile and 110 yards), with B.G. Desert Glow has 8.9 for the ten furlong journey just ahead and. although lie is not likely to have matters all his own way, the To Awamutu trained galloper must lie considered to a prominent degree.

With two seconds in succession in races like the Mew Zealand St. Lcgcr and Awapuni Gold Cun, the three-year-old Waterline must lie reckoned very unlucky. It is said that he got into a fold of the ground in the straight in the Gold Gup which threw him out of his stride but for which he would have won, for lie was going much better than Yertigern at the nosL.

The New Zealand horse Tidal has broken down and probably will be withdrawn from the Sydney Cup. Ned Kelly, who has had his hcadJ quarters at Whangarei this season, will jbe racing at the meeting at the , Northern centre this week. The Quin ] Abbey gelding is in the hurdles on j Thursday with 9.7, and as the journey is just over one mile and a hall' lie should go well as lie is a good jumper and very speedy- Ned Kelly is aiso an acceptor for the Settlers*’ Handicap on the first day, having 9.6 for the seven furlong flat event which is confined to district owned horses. They think a lot of Omeo in Taranaki. The .win of this 'Quarantine gelding in the hurdles on the first day u! Hie Manawatu meeting was impressive, and, all goipg well, he will be j heard of in big events during the winter. Ilis dam, Munitioness, is bv j Gravitation from Toltie, by Dishonour : from Miss Cole, by King Cole, tracing j back to a mare of unknown breeding. | Hike a lot of olher Taranaki horses, ! however, the obscure origin does not Inflect their usefulness as racehorses, land Omeo's dam is half-sister to a

couple of former good gallopers in j Avon Park and Egmont Park Silvermine was not started on the second day at Awapuni on account of j the hard track. All going well and the weights being suitable, he will go to Elierslic at Easter. It is only since the summer that he has been | tried beyond a sprint distance, and j lie lias not done badly. He won over 1 eight furlongs and a half on the i second day of the Egmont Summer ! meeting, but failed at a mile at Tren- | tham in January. lie was only just | nosed out of a victory at nine furj longs by The Swell on Wednesday at Awapuni. Silvermine might run well at Klierslic, especially if he strikes a soft track. His dam, Silver Link, won the Easter Handicap there nine

years ago- 1 The thrce-ycar-old gelding Just an Idea has created a very favourable impression by his recent good form, | which includes a double success at j Opunake, and a third and a win at | -Ylanawatu. Just an Idea, like all the | | Chief Rulers, is very smart, and more ; will be heard of him. His dam, Gaiety Girl, has disappeared from recent volumes of the stud book, but she is by San Fran from The I-lempie, by Natator from Romp, by Ravens-

worth from Flirt, by Nut with—Flirt, a mare bred in Tasmania of unknown blood. Here we have a mare of obscure origin founding a family of good gallopers, and there is no doubt that most of the old-time,mares which

reached New Zealand in similar fashion were of pure blood. “The Watcher” has the following in the Dominion concerning a galloper previously owned by the Matamata sportsman, Mr J. Pohlen: —One of the most, improved gallopers of the present lime is the four-year-old gelding Fcrndcn. Originally raced in the Auckland district, lie is an Australianbred horse by Uedfern from Meriden, by 'Challenger from Merry Widow, by Wallace—La Chevitlo, by Thunderbolt—'lnstep (imp.), by Lord Clifden. lie cost only J3O guineas at the Syd-

I ncy yearling sales, Hie Rcdfcrns apparently not being highly thought of. There is, however, an abundance of very stout blood on both sides of j Fernden’s pedigree. Ilis sire, Red- | fern, is by St. Denis, a son of St Simon, j out of a mare by Ladas —Red Wing, j Ladas is a grandson of Lord Clifden i out of the famous mare lliuminata, J who has a brilliant family representaj tive here in Simper, and Red Wing is jby Gallinule, a son of Isonomy. Challonger, sire of Fernden’s dam, is by ! Isinglass, • a son of Isonomy', out of j Meddlesome, whose dam, Busybody, j was by Petrarch, son of Lord Clifden. I Fernden thus has close up in his pediI gree a doubling of the best English j blood through Isonomy and Lord Clif- ! den, two renowned racehorses, and the latter is also the sire of the imported marc which started his family in Australia. SIR MONO SCRATCHED. (tty Telegraph.—Press Association.) WII AN GAR ET, Monday. Sir Mond was scratched for all engagements at the Whangarci meeting as a result of having struck himself during a gallop this morning.
