THE 48-HOURS’ WEEK t MILITANTS DEFEATED. DECISION AGAINST STRIKE. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel.—Copyright. (Received March 29, 10.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 29. A special Labour Council meeting defeated by 63 votes to 30 the militants’ proposal for a rail- / way strike as a protest against the 43-hours’ week, but a conference of all unions will be held next week to discuss the position. The weak organisation of the railway unions, the shortage of funds, and the already existing widespread unemployment were factors in defeating the militants’ plans.
