A sheriff, Ilicknian, was killed when the posse attempted to stop the bandits’ motor car, which was speeding through the town to the western mountain passes.; r The robbers then tried to double back into Kansas by a circuitous route. Another sheriff, William Cole, and three officers attempted to stop them when they were crossing the highway at Cheyenne Wells, but the bandits killed Cole, wounded two of his men, captured their car and headed eastward. Eventually the three men were surrounded and 'surrendered to machinegun fire after having led the police a hard chase through three States for 27 hours.
