AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MEETING AT AUCKLAND. GOLDING AND LERIWOND APPEAR. AUCKLAND, Monday,, On Si,v,day at Carlaw Park the Auckland centre of tlie N.Z.A.A.A. put on a very attractive programme, and among those competing were Leo Lermond, the American National one milo champion, Or. A. Golding, Australian 4.40 yards champion. There were perhaps just over 2000 present. Some disappointment was caused when Lermond failed to appear in the mile, and later when Savidan did not. toe the mark in the three miles. The centre endeavoured to arrange a race at 1000 yards, which is Lermond’s pet distance, but Savidan announced he would not run. It is not an uncommon thing to find the stars willing to run only at their own particular i'avoured distance. Only recently Dr. Peltzer refused to meet Golding at 440 yards. Lermond, who made his first ap- : pearance in the SBO yards handicap, was set an impossible task in being asked to concede up to 120 yards start. The champion strode along, butthose he passed were only the tired ones. Lermond took 1.08 4-5 for the half mile, his last quarter taking 62 2-5. T’ne Australian crack. G. Golding, came in the 440yds, and had no difficulty in winning. Golding coveredthe 440 yards in 49 1-5, which is twofifths better than has ever been done by a New Zealander. The record is 48 3-ss, put up by Nigel Barker in Australia in 1905. Results of Events. 100 Yards Maiden Handicap, final.— n. Gavin, 4yds, 1; T. Browne, syds.. 2: T. ‘Montgomery, syds, 3.
