•Mtement by Woman. .The inquest was then proceeded with. A statement was first produced which had been made 'by Mrs Cubitt. “I was divorced three years ago, fol- > lowing upon a deed of separation between my husband and myself,” she said. ‘‘l became acquainted with the deceased some two years ago. I was With him on New Year’s Eve. There . had been no talk of suicide up to then. We walked up and down the streets for some time. The deceased WM a mental condition that I bad ibyer seen him in before. He was towlbly worried and melancholic, , and was talking wildly. We finally arrived' |t ' a hotel in the city, where deceived had a friend. I was very worried myself at this time; in fact, We went from the hotel to the water--; V front after having Written letters of farewell at the hotel. We had not v agreed to commit suicide, but I knew that if deceased committed suicide I . could only do the same, and I was worried about him and what he would do.' I do not remember what happened on the waterfront, nor do 1 remember going into the water. My re* collection is blank as to that." •

Evldenoe of Business Associate v David Lewis, assistant manager ol Radio, Ltd., said that he first Knew of Davies’ intrigue with another woman six months ago. On December 30, Davies told witness that he “had made a mess of his life,” and that there was another woman in the case.. He said that he had made up his mind to resign his position and go away for six months. At the end of that time he hoped that his wife would be in a different frame of mind, and Would ; allow him his freedom to marry the other woman. . V Witness continued: “When Davies arrived at the office on December 3i I asked him what sort of a day he had had, and he said ‘an awful day/ Mrs Cubitt had rung him on the tele- . phone several times, and on each occasion there had been a scene at home as the result. I asked him what he intended to dso, and he said, ‘I am 1 , definitely finished with Mrs Cubitt.’! Witness said that in the course of association with Davies he had got to ( know him rather Well. For the last six months he had become nervy. He . suffered from earache, and complained that it gave him noises in the head, and that he could not sleep. Asked (by the coroner whether thers was any further evidence that might be called, Chief-Detective Hammond said there was that of Mri Davies,-, who had collapsed and could not appear in Court. She could give evidencc of deceased’s infatuation for • Mrs Cubitt, which was the .cause of , the whole trouble. The coroner returned a verdict of suicide by drowning. Mr Hunt added that death followed acute mental de- , pression consequent, upon deceased’® entanglement with another woman.
