Lack of xvater hindered attempts to fight the fire. The hotel was built in 1899, and was known to thousands of British •tourists'. It was the scene of many historic meetings, notably that between Marshal Petain (France) and General Prirno de Rivera (Spain) in 1926 regarding the pacification of Morocco.
