FAMOUS HOTEL BURNED.

QUESTS’ NARROW ESOAPE. SUSTAIN EXTENSIVE LOSSES. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. —Copyright. MADRID, January 13. The famous Reina 'Christina Hotel at Algeciras, near Gibraltar, was destroyed by fire last evening. The outbreak is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

There were 200 guests in the establishment at the time of"the lire, most of whom were British. All escaped, though the flames spread rapidly and nearly trapped several. Sir James Parr, ex-Hi'gh Commissioner for New Zealand, and his daughter were among the visitors, who were at tea when the alarm was given. The guests all rushed to their rooms with the object of saving their belongings, but many were driven back by the flames. Their losses were extensive.

Lack of xvater hindered attempts to fight the fire. The hotel was built in 1899, and was known to thousands of British •tourists'. It was the scene of many historic meetings, notably that between Marshal Petain (France) and General Prirno de Rivera (Spain) in 1926 regarding the pacification of Morocco.
