THE ANGLIOAN CHURCH.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I think your correspondent ' “Anglican” is a little too optimistic. ' when .he expresses the opinion that nothing can now hinder the march of ■progress in Waikato church life.' It is ■true that at present there appear to •(be no tangible reasons for quarrelling and I for one slncreely hope none will • be forthcoming. Nevertheless, recent w events in the Anglican Church at Home sound a note of warning which must not he ignored toy members of the Anglican communion in New Zealand. Under’ the wise and moderate spiritual - leadership ’of Archbishop Julius arid Archbishop Averill we have had few sharp divisions of opinion over doctrinal” matters and the Dominion (bishops are prudenly declining to meddle with the prayer-book- Unfortunately - there is a small hut growing (body .of clergy represented in Auckland and elsewh.ere who . are palpably determined to establish an AngloCatholic branch of the Church in New Zealand, as in England- The chaos which this movement has produced in ■certain English dioceses is ■ only -too evident, and while one hesitates .to :/,] suggest, •militant /resistance of , these V . tendencies it is only reasonable to urge that everything should he done to diSr courage them. In this country the ' Anglican Church has always been noted for its sober arid tolerant body of ad- ’ berents,. staunch to the principles of ' the Reformation and unswayed by extremists in either direction. Long may this attitude continue! —I am, etc., '.• ...; -NON-PARTISAN.
