Mr Victor White, sub-editor of “The Press," Christchurch, who had been visiting Kereone during the holidays, returned home on Monday night. Two of Australia’s leading jockeys, (says a Sydney cable), J. Munro and W. Scanlon have sailed for Europe. Munro is io ride in Germany and Scanlon in France.
Mr. George Mercer, who Is attached to the goods staff at the Palmerston North, railway station, will leave at an early date on transfer to Mercer.
Mr K. M. Wright, engineer to the Raglan County Council, was granted leave by the council at its meeting today to attend the annual gathering of the New Zealand Society of -Engineers, which is to open at Dunedin on February 18.
Mr. William Seeds, British High Commissioner oh the Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission, has been appointed Ambassador to Brazil. He will succeed Sir Esmond Ovey, now Ambassador to Russia.
Guests at the Grand Central Hotel include Colonel G. J. Smith (Christchurch), Messrs T. J. Bell, W. Stockman, 11. Newbiggen (Napier), 11. G. Pearce, H. Todd, and C. Davis (Auckland).
Sir Robert Vansittart has taken up his duties as Permanent Under-Sec-retary for Foreign Affairs in succession to Sir Ronald Lindsay, who is to leave England in about two months to assume his new post as Ambassador to the Unite’d States.
Messrs. P. Coyle, D. Bohan, E. Gilbertson (Wellington), D. E. Booth (Dunedin), J- C- Laing, J. Macfariane Laing, J. H. Wright (Masterton), 77. j. Fraser (Auckland), R. H. Cazalet (Tauranga) and H. S. Blundell, H. R. Hume (Nelson) are among the latest arrivals at the Hamilton Hotel.
Mr W. W. Ryan, in accordance with the Atlantic Union Oil Company’s policy of selecting Australians for. executive positions, has been appointed to the board of directors. Mr Ryan, who has for a number of years been associated with the Australian oil industry, joined I,lie Atlantic Union Oil Company as city sales manager at the company’s inception. Much of the initial .organising work was handled by him, and his enthusasm and marked ability earned for him tlic general sales manager’s chair. Mr Ryan is a keen motorist, and can also claim more than an average proficiency at tennis, while golf is his pet recreation when time permits.
