THE CANCER FUND

AUCKLAND’S ATTITUDE. MISUNDERSTANDING CLEARED UP. EQUAL REPRESENTATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The adjourned meeting of the New Zealand Cancer Campaign Committee was held yesterday to consider changes in the rules suggested by Auckland. Dr. Elliott, president, said the principal matter at issue was whether there should be a central controlling body, or whether each division should have complete autonomy. The parent body in the Old Country held that there should he central control in such matters lo prevent overlapping and loss of efficiency in research work. The principle of equal representation of divisions was generally approved, and. it was decided lo recommend an alteration of the rules so as to provide that three delegates should be appointed on the central committee by each division. The Mayors of the four chief cities, and the chairmen of four chief hospital boards are to be ex officio members of the committee, deputy delegates to be appointed when necessary.

Mr Shirtcliffe asked if, in view of the alterations now recommended in the rules, Auckland people would desire complete autonomy. Dr. Elliott said if the representatives would go back to Auckland and explain that the constitution of the central committee had been altered to meet this desire for the equal representation of divisions Auckland would come into line. If not, it would be a great pity, as Auckland would cut itself off from the Imperial Cancer Campaign, and lose all the prestige and inspiration to be derived from their association with the movement. The Auckland delegates said they would put the considerations before the Auckland people, and they felt confident that whatever misunderstanding might have existed would bo cleared up. OTAGO’S CONTRIBUTION. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Otago and Southland Empire Cancer Fund has been opened to public subscription. There has been a generous and immediate response, with the result that £GSOO, over one-quar-ler of the amount aimed at, £25,000 is already in hand.
