Two schoolgirls, Thelma Riley, aged 15, and Elvy Hamilton, aged 9, were drowned in the surf at Thirroul, on the South Coast. Two others in the same party were rescued at the point of exhaustion. The tragedy was relieved only by the heroism of Beach Inspector Jack Rankin, who, after rescuing two, searched for the others. He had to be dragged forcibly from the water ind needed medical attention.
