DOMAIN GROUNDS.

QUESTION OF LEASES. \' TENNIS AND RUQBY* MATTERS, REMITTING RATES. At a special meeting of a select committee of the Hamilton Domain Board, at which the question of rates of Domain grounds, the Hamilton Tennis Club and Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association leases were fully discussed, as well as the lease of Rugby Park to the Hamilton Rugby Union, the Town Clerk stated that the council would not be agreeable to remitting rates due by sports bodies leasing Domain Lands. He thought the council would, however, agree to any request from the Domain Board to lease land under “The Hamilton Domain Amendment Act, 1922." Mr. Fow generally endorsed these remarks. After considerable discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. R. Fow, seconded by Mr. R. Parr, “That subject to the approval of the B'orough Council the board would recommend the Governor-General to execute a lease to the Hamilton Tennis Club for a period of 7 years under "The Hamilton Domain Amendment Act, 1922,” at a rental of £SO per year for the first three years and £75 per year for the remaining four years; that the lease should be generally in terms of draft lease already discussed between the Board and the Tennis Club and more particularly dealt with in a letter from the president of the tennis club dated 16th January, 1929, and the board’s letter of 15th April, 1929; that the land be surveyed and that half the cost of survey be borne by the Hamilton Tennis Club and the Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association and the other half cost of tne survey he borne by the Domain Board.”

The Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association’s lease was the next matter for discussion, and the motion proposed by Mr. J. R. Fow, seconded by Mr. R. C. Fowler, was canted:—■ “That subject to the Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association becoming incorporated and subject to th« approval of the Borougu council, i-e Board would recommend the GovernorGeneral to grant a lease of part of Lots 5 and 7 Hamilton West, for the purpose of tennis courts, such lease to be for a period of 7 years, the first 5 years rent to toe for 'the nominal sum of Is per year and the last 2 years rent to be £2O per year; lease to be under “The Hamilton Domain Amendment Act 1922"; that the terms of lease shall he similar to the terms in the proposed lease to the Hamilton Club; that the Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association be required to submit a plan of the courts and lay out of the ground to he approved by the Board; that the land be surveyed and that half the cost of the survey be borne by the Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association and the Hamilton Tennis Club and the other half to be borne by the Domain Board.” In connection with the lease to tho Hamilton Rugby Union it was resolved, one the motion of Mr. R. C. Fowler, seconded by Mr. J. R. Fow.—“That the Board accept a surrender of the present lease to the Hamilton Rugby Union and subject to the approval of the Governor-General, grant a new lease of the land covering No. i, 2, and 3 grounds for a period of 21 years commencing from Ist. April, 1930, at the rental of 15 per cent, of the total takings of the Union from all sources, with a minimum of £125 per year for the first 2 years, £l5O for the next 5 years, £175 for the next 7 years and £2OO for the last 7 years; that the new lease be on similar terms to the existing lease other than the rent.
