The great increase in building operations in Hamilton during the past few months has been an important factor in the progress of the town, which is growing steadily year by year. The leading members of the building trade, recognising that good work depends largely on the quality of the building material, are ordering their timber, reliable, properly seasoned, and free from borer, from the Sawmlllers’ Timber Trading Company, Ltd., Ward Street, who can supply timber in large or small lots to suit all purposes. Their material is guaranteed. Five petitions in bankruptcy were filed in New Plymouth last month, compared with six for November, 1928. For the .eleven months of the year, compared with the same period of 1928, there was a decline of 11. A remarkable increase in the sale of motor cars is reported since the arrival of the New Ford. Motorists have discovered that for service, economy and reliability there is no car within the price range of the New Ford to equal it. See the latest models at F. Baker’s, Ltd., Collingwood Street.

An allegation that a man working for the Christchurch City Council was distributing disloyal literature to other employees was made at the meeting of the City Council the other night by Gr J. Parlane, who asked the Mayor if he was aware of this state of affairs. “So far as I’m concerned,” replied the Mayor, “ 1 have no -knowledge of such a man. What he does in his own time is nothing to do with, the council, but if it is shown to me that he is using our time and our premises for that purpose, I would be in favour of his instant dismissal.”
A four-foot wave of sea water 30 feet deep—a very moderate and usual condition—has 5.45 horse-power per foot of front, 28,000 horse-power per .mile. If the wave is Bft high, the horse-power rises to 25.58 for each running foot of shore front, or 135,002 horse-power per mile. Engineers have planned a device for gathering and storing the energy of waves by means of a hydraulic ram. A large funnel is set at the surface with its mouth toward the ope?i sea and bejond the breakers. The force of the wave entering it drives the water through a long horizontal pipe leading below sea level to the shore. At the end the shock strikes the ram, which at every stroke lifts a certain amount of water to a high reservoir on the cliff behind, perhaps 100 feet above the sea. The stored water can be drawn off as needed and converted into electric current by turbine and dynamo.
