RUSSIAN FAMINE

MINERS LEAVING COALFIELDS. The critical position of food suppiles in the Donctz coalfields of Russia has now been turned into famine. Information received in London shows that the attempts to relieve the suffering of the most populated areas have failed owing to lack of supplies. The Ekonomicheskaya Zhizn of October 8 and 9 warned the Soviet Government of “serious possibilities,” and gave abundance of facts to show that in addition to the usual consequences of famine the coal industry would suffer a serious setback. Among the commodities entirely lacking are potatoes (the main foodstuff among the Soviet miners), all kinds of other vegetables, butter and other fats. The shortage of bread is acute. The miners are eating oats and oatmeal. None of the State shops has any reserves, even of tinned foodstuffs, and there is no fish. The miners arc leaving the coalfields in thousands.
