MORRINSVILLE BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. IMPORTANT MATTERS DISCUSSED. The fortnightly meeting of the Morrinsville , Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: —The Mayor (Mr W. McPherson), Crs. Chapman, Donald, Morrlce, Wilkes, Reason, and Martin. The engineer (Mr Branch) was also in attendance.
Mrs A. H. Mavis wrote asking why her husband’s license had been refused by a former council.—The Mayor explained that as there were only two of the present councillors who. had been in the council at that time the request could not be granted. The matter had been fully discussed at the time.
The secretary of the Swimming Club asked that one night a week be set aside as club night at the baths.— The request was granted. Messrs Allen Needham and Morton, the council’s solicitors, stated that the •necessary arrangements for the widening of Lome Street had been completed, and the matter of compensation only remained to be settled. — It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor and borough solicitors. The Chamber of Commerce wrote congratulating the council and the engineer on thfi improvements made in the streets and pavements. Water Supply. The Officer of Health stated that three samples of the town water had been received and analysed. The analysis of the water taken at different parts was forwarded, all of which had proved satisfactory, especially the chlorinated samples. The councillors expressed themselves gratified at the results of the analyses. ■ ■ A letter was received from the Main Highways Board regarding granting holidays to maintenance men, stating that as the traffic was greater at Christmas and other holidays men must be kept at work. The Waikato Hospital Board stated that it intended making additions to the hospital buildings, which at present were quite inadequate for the number of patients admitted. The report of the committee appointed to enquire into the question of granting permission for a rifle range at the school was held over for next meeting. Building permits for buildings to the total value of £3655 were granted. Engineer’s Report. The report stated that good progress had been made on the loan construction works, and would be completed during the month. it called attention to the growth of grass on the footways and streets generally, which would have to be attended to. The bitumen plant would shortly complete all works to be done in the borough, and would then be in a position to be hired out for the balance of the season. The plant was in firstrate working order. The chlorinating plant was working very satisfactorily, and several new meters had been installed. The report was adopted. Finance Committee’s Report. The Finance Committee recommended that the following amounts be passed for payment: —From Roading Loan,"£lo7o 6s 3d; from the District Fund, £2102 14s 4d. The Bank balances were:—District Fund, debit, £1919 18s 7d; sewage connections, debit, £193 5s 3d; Roading Loan, credit, £143 17s 9d. The recommendation that the office telephone be taken over by the council was held over until next meeting; also the Town Hall site. The rest of the report was adopted. Works Committee’s Report. The Works Committee’s report, recommending certain conditions for sewage connections and the charges to be made for same, was adopted. The question of a re-arrangement of the town lights was referred to the Works Committee.
