“JOURNEY’S END.”
THE KING ATTENDS PLAY. MANUSCRIPT SOLD BY AUCTION. REALISES £ISOO. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. —Copyright LONDON, Nov. 14. The King and Queen, and the Duke and Duchess of York paid a surprise visit to “Journey’s End” to-night. This is the King’s fourth visit to the theatre this week. He sent for Mr R. G. Sheriff, the author of the play, after the second act and said he found the play most interesting and was enjoying it very much. He questioned Mr Sheriff about the production of the play abroad, particularly its treatment by German producers. Mr Sheriff was, earlier in the evening, present at the League of Nations’ dinner at Guildhall, where the manuscript of “Journey’s End” was sold by auction. Sir James Barry began bidding at £SOO, Lord Mayor Waterlow bid £I2OO and the manuscript was knocked down to Sir Walter Laurence for £ISOO. Sir Walter Lawrence is a keen supporter of the League of Nations and he announced that he had bought the manuscript to be preserved for the nation. The auction disclosed that the entire “ Journey’s End ’’ company had offered a week’s salary for the manuscript, but they had to be told it was not enough. ■
