EDUCATION COMMITTEE

TOUR OF INQUIRY. TWO WEEKS’ ITINERARY. VITAL QUESTION FOR HAMILTON. The Parliamentary Education Committee, which is about to tour the Dominion and take evidence on important questions of educational policy, will leave Wellington for Auckland next Sunday evening and begin its work in Auckland on Monday. Mr J. A. Young, M.P., for Hamilton, who is a member of the committee, has received a telegram from the Minister, Hon. H. Atmore, stating that the party will spend about a week in Auckland and will afterwards visit Rotorua, Matamata, Hamilton, Pio Pio, New Plymouth, Feilding and Palmerston North. The actual dates are not yet decided, but the following tentative itinerary has been mapped out: —Reach Rotorua, Saturday, November 23; sit at Rotorua on Monday and reach Matamata that evening; reach Hamilton on Tuesday and leave that night by the Limited Express for Te Kuiti; visit Pio Pio (where there is a consolidated school) on Wednesday, 26th, and reach New Plymouth the same day. Whether this programme can be followed will depend largely on the time the committee finds it necessary to spend in Auckland. The Minister has asked that those who have evidence to present shall, 1f possible, put it into the form of written statements. Mr Young suggests that advice of attention to tender evidence should be sent beforehand, preferably by telegram to the secretary, Parliamentary Education Committee, Auckland. The committee will consider the Minister’s proposal that the control of the two types of secondary schools — technical and academic —should be unified. As this question is of vital importance to Hamilton, Mr Young suggests that the two boards concerned should be prepared to give evidence when the committee visits this town. The committee comprises Mr W. A. Bodldn (chairman), the Hon. H. Atmore, Messrs G. C. Black, C. L. Carr, P. Fraser, H. Holland, T. W. McDonald, A. J. Murdoch, G. R. Sykes and J. A. Young.
