Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective of fiction, smoked “black shag,” and derived inspiration from it when puzzling over some problem of extraordinary toughness. But shag is too strong for many smokers. It contains too much nicotine, and nicotine is a bad thing. Habitual use of such tobacco is bound sooner or later to affect the health. Unfortunately the imported tobaccos are all loaded with nicotine. And that’s where they differ from our New Zealand-grown varieties. These latter are all toasted. That’s why they are so pure and so comparatively free from nicotine. The toasting also accounts for their beautiful flavour and aroma.
