HUGE SUBMARINE.
LAUNCHED AT CHERBOURG.. “A SUBMERSIBLE CRUISER.” United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.—Copyright LONDON, Nov. 12. A new French submarine, the Surcouf is to be launched at Cherbourg on Monday. She will be the world’s largest craft of the type. The Daily Mail's Paris correspondent says “submersible cruiser” would be a truer name than submarine for the new vessel. Her deck is armoured and , 6 her torpedoes are so arranged that she could attack an enemy ship in any position. Also, she has four sin. quick-firers as well as anti-aircraft guns. The vessel is 400 ft. long, wi'th a speed of 19 knots. Her displacement afloat is 3250 tons and submerged 3301 tons. She can submerge to a depth of 560 ft. The largest submarine now afloat is the British vessel XI. She is 350 ft. long with six torpedo tubes, and she cost more than £1,000,000. The Surcouf is of the cruiser type of submarine. The vessel w’as laid down as Q 5 at Cherbourg In December 1927 under the 1926 programme.
