LEAMINGTON AFFAIRS.

MONTHLY MEETINGi

THE TOWN BOARD. At Hie monthly meting of the Leamington Town Board Mr W. Richmond presided. Mr Mack reported that the work at Mack’s gravel pit had been carried out and a good job made of it. The Public Trust Board wrote that it is making arrangements to offer the Leamington sections of James Hickey, deceased, for sale by public auction. Mr Hogan requested that he be granted a renewed lease of his section. It was decided to grant a further lease of 21 years with right of renewal. It was decided the board should retain half of the concrete moulds and dispose of the remainder at cost price. Municipal Association. The board decided to forward a remit to the Municipal Association to the effect that all boards, etc., should have power to make people eradicate the weeds on their road frontages and sections and the charge be upon the land. At present boards have power only to make the owners of property keep the weeds cut so as to prevent them from flowering, but this is a very unsatisfactory procedure as the roots keep, every season growing larger and become harder io take out. The board's inspector Mr R. B. Webber, reported that during (he month llic registration of cows grazing on the roads had been continuing and to date 91 cows were registered. The inspector stated that he had had trouble with several people whose cattle had lost their tags or chain, and new ones bad not been secured for them. He thought that some other method than that in use should be brought into vogue. Noxious Weeds. Mr Webber slated that a lot of clearing had been carried out during the month, and he was pressing the matter in several cases. Ragwort, said the inspector, was growing strongly in many parts and he intended to deal with the menace in a drastic manner. It was decided to go ahead with the work of tar-sealing the approach at the bridge in the Main Highways area, for which, provided they constructed to the approval of the Main Highways Board, the Town Board would receive a subsidy. Finance.

The clerk stated that a debit balance of £49G 7s 4d was shown at the bank. Accounts amounting to £BO 18s 4d were passed for payment. It was decided that a remit to the effect that the election of town boards should be on the same day as that of borough councils should be sent to the Municipal Association of New Zealand. Leamington Domain Board. The same members sat as the Leamington Domain Board immediately after the former meeting. An application was received from the Cambridge Cricket Club asking for the use of the outer domain as a cricket ground.—lt was resolved that the club be informed that the outer domain was not available and the board could not see their way clear to allow them to put down a concrete pitch in the front portion of the grounds or on the football ground, but the front portion would be available ii a grass pitch was intended. Rents. The secretary stated that there were a large number of outstanding rents, and in his opinion it was about time something was done to ensure collection.—The clerk was instructed to notify the delinquents that if the outstanding rents were not paid within a fortnight the hoard would re-enter and call for tenders for lease as from November 1. Petty Thieving. The domain gardener, Mr Hulme, reported that on two occasions a person had entered the domain at night and stolen flowers.—lt was decided ttiat the entrance to the domain be locked by the caretaker at dusk each evening. Finance. A credit balance of £3G 2s 3d was at the bank. Accounts for £29 Gs Gd were passed for payment.
