TIHEFT ZINE,
MAORIS PLEAD GUILTY. Two young Maoris from the Pirongia district, Wireme Turner and Charlie Brown, were 'brought before Messrs G. A. Empson and \V. Swain, J’s.P., at the Te Awamutu Court to answer charges of theft of benzine. Constable Hooker, who prosecuted, said there had been several instances of theft of benzine from motor vehicles in various parts of the district, and the police had been prosecuting inquiries for some time, with the result that the two accused were arrested. The actual charge referred to the theft of a four-gallon drum of benzine on September 28, the property of Gustav Lorenz. Both men pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Constable Hooker said the patrons of the picture theatre at Pirongia were the usual sufferers, while other articles left in cars were also missed. It was stated that a penalty of three months’ imprisonment had been earned, but as accused are first offenders for this sort of offence, they would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon. Restitution of the four gallons of benzine would have to be made immediately.
