BRITISH POLITICS.

THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT. AS SEEN BY AN AMERICAN. The achievements that may he expected of the British Labour Government if it retains office for a considerable time were outlined by Dr. Harry W. Laidier, executive director of the League for Industrial Democracy (says the New York Times). Dr. Laidier recently returned from a visit, to England, where lie interviewed members of the Labour Government. The reduction of naval armaments and strengthened relations with the United States, Egypt and Russia are parts of the British international prospect, he said, adding that at home the Labourites might lie expected to check unemployment, provide adequate workers’ homes, improve social insurance laws and rationalise the coal industry. “Negotiations with Russia,” he added, ‘‘have been begun, and if Russia is willing to give Britain assurances on tiic question of propaganda there is no reason why ambassadors will not be exchanged again next fall. Advance in School Age.

Noting Ihe advance in school age, from 1 i to J 5 years, Dr. Laidier said that the various Ministries “are working on comprehensive schemes to lie presented to Parliament in the fall.” "In tiic presentation of the next Budget,” lie continued, “Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, will undoubtedly urge the application of the land values tax, hv .which at least a considerable portion of the increment in land values will accrue to -the community. Labour is also committed to higher income and inheritance taxes on tlie upper level income. “Of course, the Government’s proposals are bound to he limited by the fact that it. does not have a majority vote in Parliament and that a combination of Tories and Liberals may at any lime force it to resign. "Students of the subject are inclined to the belief that Labour will remain in office for the next eighteen months or two years, and several departments are laying down their plans on the basis of a four-year term. The governmental experiment is one of ttie most interesting in the world to-day.”
