TAUPO RAILWAY.
INQUIRY RESUMED
BREAKING IN PUMICE LAND. ' COST £ls PER ACRE. (■By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The Parliamentary-inquiry into the Rotorua-Taupo railway question was resumed to-day. Thomas Banks, principal warder at the Hautu prison camp, said lie had had 14 years’ experience of pumice lands and was convinced it would produce satisfactorily, provided it was worked in the right manner. All that was needed was humus, and he had produced that by ploughing in clover. He considered three parts of the land contiguous to the proposed route could be broken in for settlement. He stated, “ | would safely say It would cost £ls per acre to bring it Into profitable occupation under group settlement.” He considered Hie best method was on the community basis of organised labour on a large scale.
