A KAWHIA PIONEER
LATE MR H. WHITEMAN. MAORI WAR VETERAN. The late Mr Henry Whiteman, who died at Kawhia on Sunday, and whose obituary notice appeared in the Times yesterday, was one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the district.
Arriving in the colony from Ireland on tiie sailer Ganges in 1863, Mr Whiteman and his brother took up land at Pukckohe, which they farmed until tho Thames gold rush, when they “swagged it,” and tried their luck on the golden ranges. After gum buying at Mercury Bay for some years Mr Whiteman went to Kawhia, where he has been farming for (he last 30 years. He was a Maori war. veteran, having taken a prominent part in the native uprising in the Waikato. He is survived by one son, Mr T. F. Whiteman, public works overseer, Kawhia, and live daughters, Mrs I. K. MeGuken and Mrs M. Lacey, of Sydney, and Mesdamcs E. O’Connor, Mi O'Connor, and G. P. Brough, of Kawhia.
