TROTTING AT AUCKLAND.

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND MEETING. CARMEL WINS WESTPORT HANDICAP. GOLD JACKET’S SPRINT SUCCESS. The Auckland Trotting Club’s Earthquake Relief Fund meeting, which was held on Saturday, was a marked success. The chief event on the card, the Westport Handicap was won by Carmel, with Walkaha and Goldman In the places. The Matakltakl Handicap, which the sprinters contested, was won by Gold Jacket, from Machine Gun and Native Prince. Rangltero won the opening event, the Karamea Handicap from Peterson and Sweet Memory. Enawah was successful In the Murchison Handicap from Gang Awa’ and Hohora. The Seddonvillo Handicap resulted In a victory for Mountain Dell' over Llmosa and Polly’s Picture. Peter McKinney led the field home In the Nelson District Handicap, Gold Sovereign and Etta Cole being In the places. Stanmoor was successful In the concluding event the Grey District Handicap, in which Carmel and Tony Victor dead-heated for second place.

NOTES FROM THE RUNNING

Madam Mack, Special Bell, Battery Bell and Reynard did not appear for the Kar&mea Handicap in which Rangitero was the best supported with Paradigm and Peterson next in demand. The favourite, a member of W. ( Hughes’ team at Longburn, won nicely by three-quarters of a length from Peterson with Sweet Memory and Te Ngutu heading the others.

Totalisator Returns.

For the Murchison Handicap, Sister Chris, Kelp and Explosion were the scratchings. Great Parrish was a pronounced favourite with Enawah and Gang Awa’ the next in request. Enawah prevailed over Gang Awa’ and Hohora with the favourite fourth. The Leading Event. Warplane and Machine Gun were the withdrawals from the leading event, the Westport Handicap. In a field of eight Great Delight was favourite over Derby Lynn and Reremai. Carmel, the fourth favourite, secured the verdict with Waikaha and Goldman the closest of the others. The eleven acceptors paraded, in the Seddonville Handicap, the Te Wahia-Kelp bracket being favourite from Mountain Dell and Nelson Dillon. Mountain Dell was the winner with Limosa and Polly's Picture second and third respectively. Our Nancy was fourth. The nine carded in the Matakitaki Valley Handicap came out, Gold Jacket being the elect with Nelson Tasker and Machine Gun also in demand. Gold Jacket won in attractive style from Machine Gun and Native Prince, with Peter Bingen fourth. The Nelson District Handicap was contested by the good held of eleven. Peter McKinney, Akenehi and Etta Cole were supported in that order. Peter McKinney proved equal to the occasion, being followed home by Gold Sovereign, Etta Cole, and Rose Bingen. For the Grey District Handicap, with which the meeting terminated, Lord Nepean, Woodvalc, Derby Lynn, Nelson Tasker and Jewel Pointer were scratched. The Warplane-Carmcl bracket was favourite over Brutus and Dillon Huon. Stanmoor, who was fourth in order of selection, won in good style with Carmel and Tony Victor dead-heating for second place, while All Bell was fourth. Also started: 2 Akenehi, 8 Anseline, (1 Flornliiie, limit; 9 Tradesman, 48 yds; 10 The Tartar, 72yds; 5 Rose Bingen, 84yds; 11 Tiger Salve, 108 yds.

Peter McKinney (£1095) was favourite with Akenehi (£lo72).and Etta Cole (£7-il) also well supported. Akenehi failed to settle down, and was pulled up. Peter McKinney was soon in front, and led from Gold Sovereign and Anseline. Passing the stand Gold Sovereign and Peter McKinney were together in front, followed by Anseline, The Tartar, Scbisca. and Ella Cole. When they came around the next lime Gold Sovereign, Tradesman and Peter McKinney, who were almost in line, showed the way to Anseline. The Tartar, Tiger Salve and Ella Cole. Along the back Etta Cole moved up into fourth place behind Gold Sovereign, Tradesman and Peter McKinney, and they raced across the top in that order,, and there was practically no change into the straight, where Tiger Salve and Bose Bingen were also handy. Peter McKinney got the best of i t in the run to Ihe post and won by a couple of lengths from Gold Sovereign, who beat Etla Cole by one length and a-half. ■ Hose Bingen was fourth, then came Tradesman arid Anseline. Times: 4.55, 4.5 G 1-5, and 4.57 4-5.

Land’s ch g by Our Thorpe—The Abbess, 12 yds (J. Shaw) t 5 TONY VICTOR, Mr C. F. .Tones’ 1) g by Antonio —Bella Victor, 12yds (E. S. Groat) t t Dead heat for second place. Also started: 2 Brutus, 8 Uncle Bert, 1 Warplane (coupled with Carmel), limit; 6 Goldman, 24yds; 7 All Bell, 3 Dillon Iluon, 36yds. The Carmel-Warplane bracket was favourite with £1864, while Brutus (£945) and Dillon Iluon (£701) were next in demand. Stanmoor, Brutus and Uncle Bert were the quickest to begin, and passing the stand were attended by All

Bell, Tony Victor and Carmel. All Bell had charge along the back from Stanmoor, Brutus, Tony Victor and Carmel. Stanmoor took the lead crossing the top with All Bell, Carmel and Tony Victor close up, and Stanmoor, holding his advantage, led into the straight and went on to score by a length from Carmel and Tony Victor, who dead-heated for second place. All Bell was next, then came Goldman, Brutus, Dillon Huon and Uncle Bert. Times: 2.19 3-3, 2.19, 2.20.

The totalisator returns for the day were £33,522 10s.
