THE SCHNEIDER CUP.

A BRITISH COMPETITOR. SUCCESSFUL TRIAL. HAIR-RAISING DASHES. <By Telegraph.—Press Assr:. —Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.; (Received September 2, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 1. Another of Britain’s Schneider Cup hopes, Gloster Napier VIII., Golden Racer, was given a maiden flight during the week-end by Squadron-Leader Orlebar. Though flying only at halfthrottle she showed amazing control in a series of hair-raising dashes. Simultaneously, Lieutenant Monte took up Italy’s 1927 ’plane, Moor of Venice, which was slow fay comparison with the Golden Racer, with which British observers are fully satisfied. MYSTERIOUS MACHINES. ITALIAN ENTRANTS. SPEED POWER NOT KNOWN. (By Telegraph.—Press .assn.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received September 2, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. Italy’s five machines at Galshot are all painted red. One Fiat, known as “The Red Devil" is an uncanny mystery as it lias never been flown. It is the smallest monoplane to be seen in the Schneider Cup circles. It lias 1500 horse power engine. The italians themselves do not know the machine’s speed they merely guess it to be 370 or 380 miles per hour. There is a "doubt if it will participate in the race. Italy’s other mystery; a two-engined Savoia is also unlikely to participate. The British team continues its preparations with undiminished confidence.
