GARDEN NOTES.
SEASONABLE WORK. (By “Nikau.”). Vegetables and Fruit. —Work up soil for seed-beds, and sow almost all hardy vegetables, but especially early peas, radish, lettuce (in boxes), carrots, and turnips. Plant cabbage, potato, rhubarb, onion, lettuce. Mould up early peas, broadbeans, cabbage, cauliflower. Plant asparagus in a special bed. Plant citrus fruits; finish planting and pruning other fruit-trees. Continue spraying 'fruit trees not in bloom, use Bordeaux or lime sulphur for fungal diseases, and red oil for pests. Take scions for grafting and put them in soil (like cuttings) until needed. Flowers. —Finish planting hedges. So lawns. Label bulbs now in flower. Plant bulbous perennials such as irises, gladioli, lilies, also gerbera. This is an excellent time for planting almost all climbers. Loosen the soil round bedding-plants. Top-dress r'osc-bed with super or blood and bone, if stable or cowynrd manure is not available for digging in. Plant, Iceland poppy, antirrhinum, stock, nemesia, viola. Fefore it is 100 late, make a good sowing of sweet peas.
