INTERESTING ITEMS. A large number of objections have 'been lodged against the Wanganui city valuations to be dealt with at the sitting of the Assessment Court. A Maori, angling for time to pay a debt, wrote to the Wanganui Court that he had a very poor job working on the public works on the Wanganui River road. “ The singer came on without simpering; some singers come on with a simper which has nothing to do with the song," said the vocal adjudicator at the Wellington competitions. A donation of £2O, to be increased to £3O at the discretion of the chairman (Mr E. Salmond), towards the formation of a commercial reference library in Wellington, was made at the last meeting qf the Chamber of Commerce. “ The idea of a commercial library is a splendid one," said Mr Salmond, who remarked that Mr A. Fletcher had given £5 5s towards the scheme.
The Wanganui Chamber of Commerce was asked to support a movement to have a night express established between New Plymouth and Wellington. At the last meeting of the Chamber members were of opinion that Wanganui was well connected with Wellington as far as transport was concerned, and could not be served any better in that direction than at present.
The Inconvenience to farmers imposed by the regulations which require them to obtain permits before they can purchase explosives, was referred to’at a meeting of the Wanganui Chamber of Comme-ce. It *vas decided to frame a remit to be forwarded to the conference of Chambers of Cammerce with a view to having the present rule abolished.
The Wanganui Chamber of Commerce has decided to forward a remit to the conference of Associated Chambers of Commerce to the effect that the Government be asked to consider making Saturday a universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion.
“ This Chamber views with concern the tremendous fire losses in New Zealand, and urges, the Government to set up a commission to go into the matter at the earliest possible opportunitv." The above remit is to be forwarded to the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce by the Wanganui Chamber.
That the dairying industry is well established in Fiji was the opinion expressed by Mr F. G. Stevenson when interviewed upon his return to Invercargill recently. Not only did the factories, of which there were many on the island of Vitu Levu, supply all the local requirements, but they produced a surplus, and this was exported. One strange law he noticed in Suva was in relation to the curfew. He was surprised to learn that no native Fijian is allowed out after 11 p.m, During his visit one man was arrested for being out at that time and was fined 7s 6d, or three days’ imprisonment.
