CHINA AND RUSSIA.

EFFORTS AT SETTLEMENT. GERMANY’S GOOD OFFICES. A COMPROMISE PROBABLE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SHANGHAI, August 29. It is semi-oQlcially reported at Nanking that owing to the efforts of the German Foreign Office, plus the firm and sincere stand taken by the Chinese Minister, Chiang Tso-ping, it is confidently expected in Berlin that the present dispute between China and Russia shortly will be ended. It is believed that a compromise on the question of the appointment of a Russian manager for the Chinese Eastern Railway will be effected within a week. The reply of the Nanking Government to the last Note from the Soviet, transmitted through Chiang Tso-ping, reiterates China’s denial that she had ever resorted to provocative measures or demonstrations against the Soviet army. It also maintains that strict vigilance has been kept over the fresh activities of the White Russians .in Manchuria in the attempt to undermine the Soviet’s authority in Siberia. The reply concludes by demanding compensation for the loss of Chinese lives and property as a result of border raids by Russian troops.
