DRAUGHTS.
AUCKLAND v. HAMILTON. A most Interesting draughts match was played in Hamilton last weekend, between representative teams from Auckland and Waikato Districts, which resulted in a win for the Waikato by 14$ points to 9s. The proceedings were presided over by Mr A. H. D. Tompkins, who gave a very interesting history on the antiquity of draughts in which he stated that authentic record had been found in Egypt as far back as 2JOO j B.G. This record look the form of a | draughts board and pieces discov- j ered during excavation work at Alex- ! andria, and that board and pieces may ! bo seen in the British Museum. The board is exactly the same type as in , use at the present day. j Mr Tompkins humorously referred] to the game having been played ex-! tensively in Scotland and attributed j the foresight and success of Scotchmen in business largely to what the I game has taught tham in regard to ] exactness and caution. He said, one j can generally count on every second ! Scotchman having a draughts board in his possession, and being a player of more or less ability. After .play the visitors were entertained at a banquet, during which several toasis were duly honoured and “Auld Lang Sync,” brought to o close a very enjoyable evening. The following were the detailed scores:— HAMILTON. AUCKLAND.
