MORRINSVILLE AND HAMILTON. THE DETAILS OP THE PLAY. HAMILTON LEADS B—o8 —0 HALF-TIME (By Our Special Reporter.) MORRINSVILLE. Saturday. The Peace Cup Rugby match between Morrinsville (holders) and Hamilton (challengers), which Is bein' played here this afternoon, has attracted a very large attendance, which denotes the keen Interest that is being taken in the contest. The weather is cold and showery, and the ground holding. The teams took the field as follows : —■ Llorrlnsvillo. Fullback.—-S. Thomas. Threequarters. —D. Campbell, M. Anderson, K. Campbell. Five-eighths.—A. Robson, W. Cameron. Halfback. —E. O’Brien. Rover. —A. Gillespie. Forwards. —F. Jack, R. Hanna, A. Cameron, C. Cameron, P. Kelk, J. Leeson, J. Brown, Hamilton. Fullback. —Delaney. Threequarters. Allen ( Everest, I. Johnston. Five-eighths.—St. George, Fitzgerald. Half-back. —Mitchell. Rover. —Halstead. Forwards. —Reynolds, Charleston, Courtney, Bayly, Fleming, t cou, Hooper.
Thomas captained Morrinsville and Mitchell led Hamilton on to the field. The Hamilton backs got on a pretty passing’ movement following the kickoff, Halstead joining in the effort, which carried play to the home twentyfive. The home team changed the situation quickly and Everest was penalised wide out in his own twenty-five, but the shot went wide, and Mitchell kicked clear. A penalty to Hamilton saw Halstead make good use of the opportunity and play reached midfieldFor a scrum infringement Morrinsville were again penalised. They erred again, chasing the return and play entered their twenty-five. Some solid work among the forwards followed, and Hamilton finally reached the home twenty-five. O’Brien marked well, and the kick brought relief. Hamilton were in turn ruled against in the scrum.
G>oal Goes Over. Charleston and Bayly led a visiting attack, and Thomas was penalised for holding on. Halstead kicked a fine goal. Hamilton 3 Morrinsville O' Mitchell sent his backs away, hut the effort was blocked at the fiveeighths. Willing play followed, with the visiting forwards very dashing. Visitors Eight Points Up. Bayly nailed Thomas near his line. From the scrum Hamilton heeled, and Mitchell dashed around the open side ot the scrum for a good try. Halstead goaled. Hamilton 8 Morrinsville 0 Hamilton was driven back on the resumption, P. Robson breaking through but St. George held up a dangerous dash, and Hamilton quickly got back to half-way. Several Attacks. Fitzgerald intercepted a kick from an inside back, and the visiting rearguard were again in action, Everest going out above the 25. Allen, Johnston, and Scott were prominent in a later dash, and Morrinsville were defending desperately. Fitzgerald made later thrusts, but they were held up. A penalty gave further relief to the home team. Hamilton had had the best of it up to this stage. Mitchell, Fitzgerald, and Johnston brought the play back, and Everest looked dangerous, but the ball went out. K. Campbell put in a brilliant breakaway, but Delaney kicked out close to the line. Mitchell cleared the danger finally.
The Morrinsville backs came into B. Campbell dashed down the wing, but Johnson nailed him. From a penalty M. Anderson had a kick, but it failed, as an exciting first quarter ended. Second Quarter. Opening the second quarter, the home forwards reached the visitors’ twenty-live. Delaney was playing a very safe game to this stage, while the visiting forwards had proved very bustling. Fitzgerald, St. George, Everest and Allen handled, and the visitors reached the home twenty-five. O’Brien relieved the situation by a dashing solo effort, which was further assisted by a penalty in midfield. The Hamilton backs operated and reached half-way. St. George came round and saved well in the face of serious opposition.. Anderson put in a long kick to the corner, where Delaney missed, but Allen was handy. The ball went to the dead-ball area. A penalty against Hamilton forwards held them at midfield. Passing round the short side, Hamilton got stopped. Another penally went against the visitors. Anderson’s shot, a good- one, fell low.
The Hamilton backs went off in line from midfield, but Everest threw a bad pass to Allen. Once again the visiting forwards were penalised, but St. George took the return and evaded several wouldbe tacklers in good style. A good linefinding kick by Thomas gave Morrinsville the attack, but they were ruled against when threatening in front of the goal. K. Campbell failed to hold in a passing rush which had promise. Thomas a little later saved brilliantly. Allen cleared, when the situation \yas appearing threatening near his line. Too hard kicking gave Hamilton a chance to force down. Morrinsville were playing with a lot or dash. Anderson Railed with a penalty. Charleston led the visiting pack into foreign ground as half-time came.
