THAMES VALLEY BOARD.
THE MONTHLY MEETING.
ELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVE. Mr F. M. Strange presided at the monthly meeting of the boan \^ lessr T s J. B. Thomas, F. E. Flatt J. Allen, JPohlen, J. Price, J. Anderson, \V • Torr, J. McCormick, C. A. Arthur, and H. M. Corbett also being present A letter was read from the State Forestry Department, asking whether the board had arrived at a decision re planting eucalyptus for power transmission poles this season. The ,. se ?~ retary reported information would be forwarded in due course. Garrick, Wedderspoon Ltd-, Christchurch wrote accepting the meter contract and enclosed signed documents in connection thereto. —received. The Conservator of Forests wrote that he could not recommend the use of locally-grown eucalypts. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking for a suitable date of the election of a representative for the combined Matamata County and Putaruru town district. The chairman said Putaruru had been disfranchised, but not by any action of the Board. Mr Anderson stated Matamata had no objection to Putaruru being represented. It was thought by the county that Matamata Town Board and Putaruru could come together for representation, and this would be satisfactory to Putaruru.
Mr Price proposed that in view of the proposed combined district the Public Works Department be asked to arrange an order-in-council for the representation of Putaruru. —Carried. The Hauraki Plains County Council wrote asking for the electric lighting of Ngatea Streets to be continued. —It was decided to accede to the request.
Payment of Account. A communication was received from the New Zealand Dairy Company Ltd., relative to an account for £129 4s lOd, and stating that an allowance had been arranged by Mr Kissel and asking the board to confirm this arrangement. The manager reported a reply had been forwarded asking for payment within seven days. A letter was read from J. Carder stating it was intended to resume operations at the Te Papa timber mill formerly owned by the N.Z- and B.C. Timber Company,’ and asking what would be required to secure the electric power as previously for the mill.— Particulars to be supplied. The Paeroa Borough Council wrote relative to accounts for power supplied for pump-house, and stating it is hoped the board can supply the pump-house for less than £3OO. It was stated in a further letter that the board's charge should be 12} per cent on a cost of £250. Mr James Trewin, ,of Cambridge wrote asking when lighting would be available at Wailii Beach. Mr Corbett said the beach people were anxious for the installation in time for next season. The work is to be proceeded with in due course. Hauraki Plains Representation. A letter was read from Mr W. E. G. Willy, Turua, in regard to the question of re-allocating the representation now existing in regard to Hauraki Plains County, and stating that on account of the number of consumers, over 500, the Plains is entitled to two members on the board instead of one.
Mr Platt was of the opinion that the letter would have carried more weight if it had come from an organisation preferably from one person. He proposed the matter be referred to the Member for the district— Carried. A communication was received from Rev. R. L. Connolly, inviting the' members of the Board to be present at St. Mark’s Church for the Thanksgiving Service for the recovery of the King, on July 7.—lnvitation accepted. The chairman, ex-chairman, engineer and manager were appointed the board's delegates to the Power Boards’ Conference. Accounts were passed for payment for power fund £4663 10s 3d and loan fund, £2819 18s 7d. The reports of the engineer and manager were adopted. Tree Planting. The chairman referred to the matter of further tree planting, stating that he was keen on the subject. Mr. Corbett said he was not favourable to the planting being continued and gave notice of motion that the Finance Committee be empowered to dispose of the tree planting area. Mr. Anderson quoted various figures as to cost per acre, and Mr Price gave particulars as to cost of property, purchase of trees, planting and supervision. .
Mr. Pohlen favoured cessation of planting as he was not certain the property was suitable for the purpose, while Mr. Arthur was not favourable to further expenditure at present. After discussion it was decided that an order for trees be sent, subject, however, to confirmation in one month. Manager’s Report.
The manager reported.—Consumers: The total number of consumers connected to the board’s mains now totals 6963, which includes the Thames and Te Aroha Boroughs. Thames consumers total 1074, and Te Aroha Borough 640. 39 lighting and heating consumers, 7 waterheaters, 9 electric ranges and 2 motors on farms were connected during the month. There are now connected and operating 1697 waterheaters, 302 electric ranges, and 2132 motors on farms of which 1776 are two horsepower milking motors. In addition 25 consumers had lighting and heating extensions made during the month, and one 25 horsepower, 1 71 horsepower, three two horsepower, one 1* horsepower motors were connected on meter rates. Fifteen two horsepower motors were disconnected during the month, the reason being that the consumers have gone out of dairying. Quite a number of applications for milking motors to be installed for next season have been received. Engineer's Report. The engineer reported.—Matamata substation: The work in connection with this Feed Point has now been completed, and five feeders connected in. The station can be put into operation at any time for emergencies, but w'T not be in permanent operation until a transformer to replace one of those damaged in the Hora Hora lire arrives from England. The station has already proved of service for switching j, -rposcs during the recent stormy wealhe. - .
