It closed for 322 runs, or 20 more than England’s first strike. ■Christie (15) and Mitchell (42), appeared set for a long partnership when Duckworth smartly stumped the latter. Christie terminated an excellent innings by trying an Impossible run. Tate, bowling fast, secured Deane’s wicket. White's perfect length kept the batsmen quiet, 150 appearing after three hours. A brilliant catch dismissed Cameron. Hurt Whllo Fielding. Hammond and O'Connor were hurt while fielding. White was unable to obtain a substitute until Deane called on Catterall to play for England, the groundsman replacing him later. With six down for 237 Tate successfully appealed for leg before against Morkel, who was given an ovation after a sterling innings. McMillan lifted the English skipper to the ladies’ enclosure, the ball striking a spectator on the temple. With the ninth wicket clown OwenSmilh opened out briskly, and carried the total to 322. England’s Second Innings. Disaster early befell England. Bad light stopped play at 5.30 with 49 runs on for the loss of two wickets. O’Connor, who has torn a leg muscle, is not likely to bat.
