INTERNATIONAL TENNIS

WIMBLEDON TOURNEY

EXCELLENT PROGREBB MADE. SOME INTERESTING CONTESTS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Uffloial Wireless.) RUGBY, June 30. The first week of the lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon was completed yesterday. Fine weather throughout the week permitted of excellent progress being made, and in the men's and women's singles the contestants are reduced to eight. The men are: Cochet (France), who in the next round will play Timmer (Holland); Tilden (America), who will play Landry (France) ; Borotra (France), who will play Lott (America), and Austin (Britain), who will play de Kehrling (Hungary). The women are Miss Helen Wills (America), Miss Heine (South Africa), Miss Goldsack (Britain), Miss Tapscott (South Africa), Mrs Mcllquham (Britain), Miss Helen Jacobs (America), Mrs Bundy (America), and Miss Joan Ridley (Britain). The most interesting match yesterday was that in which Austin, after a great struggle, beat Kingsley. Another keen match was that in which Mrs Mitchell (Britain), who earlier had beaten Miss Betty Nuthall, was defeated by Miss Goldsack. The match in which Fraulein Aussem (Germany) was beaten by Miss Ridley was also keenly fought. Austin’s success is regarded as fortuitous. To-day's victory proved that Austin is distinctly better than previously credited. He played a good all-round game. Cochet had a bad spell in the second set but forced the pace and won. Tilden was much below form. Men’s Doubles. Third round: —Allison and Vanryn beat Kozeluh and Andrews, 6 —2, 6—4, 62; Kleinschroth and Von Kerling beat Landry and De Buzelet. ’ LATER. QUARTER-FINALS.
