Recently a child died through eating tonic pills for adults, which contained a very small percentage of strychnine. There was nothing on the label to lead the purchaser to think there was any danger in them, and so keep them out of the way of children. The vendor was prosecuted in the Police Court and fined. The law requires that all wholesale and retail vendors of tonic tablets or medicines containing strychnine, arsenic, or other poison, shall label the bottle or packets with the word “Poison” in large type, and also the name of the poison. The label should also carry a warning that the prescribed dose for certain ages should not be exceeded on any account, and that the package should be kept carefully out of the reach of children. It is no valid defence for druggists, grocers, or other vendors to plead ignorance of the existence of dangerous substances in the made-up compounds they are selling. The onus is on all retailers to ascertain whether the goods contain any poison, and if so, to ensure that they are fully labelled accordingly
