WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.

GOVERNMENT RELIEF.

WELLINGTON, Friday

A promise to provide work for 500 men now unemployed in Auckland was given by the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in a statement to the House of Representatives this afternoon.

Sir Joseph said arrangements to that end had been made, and the men would be placed on Government relief works as rapidly as work could be laid out and tents erected. The returns showed there were 1073 unemployed in Auckland city and 412 in Wellington city.
