ANNUITY INCREASED.
SON TO BENEFIT. OVERWORKED AND UNDERPAID.
AUCKLAND, Monday
An annuity of £lO4 left by the late Alexander Bell, farmer, of Auckland, to one of his sons, out of an estate of £340,000, was strongly criticised by Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court on Saturday, in a reserved judgment in which he ordered the increase of the annuity to £SOO. The plaintiff was William Bell,, farmer, of Auckland, and of the 17 defendants represented at the hearing six were charitable institutions. “ This enormously wealthy man certainly was not extravagant toward his sons,” the Judge said. “ Indeed, it might well be said that he overworked them and greatly underpaid them. One would have imagined that when the son became ill and had lo receive medical attention his wealthy father could have done more than leave him in the public hospitals, which are not intended to be filled by persons who can easily afford private nursing and attention. I mention this fact as some further indication of the mentality of the testator and his idea of his duty toward his family and the State.”
