Evidence as to the present parlous condition of the coal industry and the causes leading to it was given by Mr. Charles McDonald, chairman of the Northern Collieries’ Association before the Coal Commission to-day. Mr. McDonald told of successive increases in wages and in the selling price of coal hetwen 1916 and 1925. His evidence contained many references to strikes and the intermittent nature of employment and steady loss of trade due to the cause. The inquiry was adjourned.
