THE DANCING CLASS. (Sent by Doris Downes, Hamilton.) Nan loves to go to dancing class Each Saturday at three; And there she'll turn and twirl about, i As happy as can be. I’m sure a daintier dancing girl You’d never wish to see. She lifts her pretty muslin skirts In such a charming way, And pirouettes across the floor— I’ve heard her teacher say: “Nan turns into a fairy for An hour each Saturday I” LATE AGAIN. (Sent by "Lilac,” Hamilton.) “You’re late again,” the teacher said. “Now, Tommy, tell me why; One day you lost your cap, the next Your stockings had to dry; You’ve said your mother wanted you; Your little sister cried; I’m certain you could he at school In good time If you tried.” “Oh, please, I started soon enough,” Said Tommy, meek and low, "But I’d a friend to bring, and he— He was so very slow!” BEDTIME. (Sent by “Wishing Dewdrop,” Hamilton East.) The butterfly, drowsy, has folded its wing; The bees are returning, no more the birds sing; Their labour is over, their nestlings are fed, It’s time little people were going to bed.
FOR THE FALLEN. (Sent by "Violet,” Motumaoho.) With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh, they were spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. They went with songs to the battle; they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, sturdy and aglow; They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. POSTMAN’S KNOCK. (Sent by Tui Murray, Hamilton.) Rat-tat I Rat-tat! There’s the postman at the door; He always knocks like that, no matter who it’s for. It may be a letter, and it may be a box, So I’m always very glad when the postman knocks.
THE BUS. (Sent by Thora Barnes, Matamata.) What a clamour! What a fuss! Getting on and off the bus — Pushing, squeezing, Stamping, nudging, Never was there So much budging. “Quick!" says Mother, “There’s another." Father answers—- “ Don’t he silly; That one goes to Piccadilly!”
