| Hockey in Te Awamulu was started 'for the 1929 season on Wednesday l afternoon, under the auspices of the . Waipa Hockey Association, when | Ramblers and Waratahs met on Albert | Park, and Ihe PaLorangi A. and B. I teams met at Mr C. J. Spiers’ ground, j Paterangi. The bad weather conditions mili- . In ted against a large attendance, and | the play owing to the damp ground and lack of practice, was not up to standard, though at times some flashes of good combined work were seen. Ramblers were first to score, 0. Civil shooting a clever one into the net after a good rally in Waratahs’ 25. A few minutes later Ihe score was equalised, who. c. Woods, following fast, beat the Rambler goalkeeper. At half-time the scores were even, and Ihe defensive work of each rearguard indicated that a draw would probably eventuate, but Waratahs set up a hot attack, and G. Wood registered a second goal. Ramblers tried hard to notch a goal to equalise, but were unsuccessful, and the game ended:—Waratahs, 2; Ramblers, 1. Mr C. A. Finch was referee. For Waratahs the most effective seemed to be R. IF ton and A. Patterson. the fullbacks, the stopping and placing saving I heir side time and again. Ramblers’ most effective men were 0. Civil and M. Finch. Several of the younger players showed distinct promise of developing into good performers as the season advances.
The Paterangi match was a keen one. and no scores were obtained until after half-time. R. Head scored for the A's, but the B’s proved too good for their opponents. A. Bowler scoring two goals and B. Spiers one. Very attractive matches have been arranged for Saturday, when four ladies’ teams will play.
