SLOT TELEPHONES
AT MORRINSVILLE STATION. REQUEST TO MINISTER, v Considerable indignation was expressed by the members of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce at the reply received from the PostmasterGeneral, Hon. J. B. Donald, to the request of the Chamber backed up by their member, Mr F. Lye, M.P., to have a public slot telephone on the Morrinsvillc Railway station. The reply stated that the Department would supply the convenience provided the public was prepared to pay 3d instead of the usual Id.
Mr Lye, M.P., who was present at the meeting, said that he had approached the Minister and obtained a definite promise from him that the desired facility would be provided. The Minister had made it a condition 3d be charged for its operation. He (Mr Lye) had objected to this, and asked the Minister to reconsider the matter. It was for the Chamber to decide whether it was prepared to have a telephone put in with a 3d call charge, or to send in a vigorous protest to the Minister.
Several members pointed out thal the charge of 3d would probably kill the telephone. With the charge at id, as in other towns, it would be largely used and the Department would derive a good revenue.
The secretary ' was instructed to write to the Hon. J. B. Donald, pointing out that the Chamber was strongly of Die opinion that a phonp was warranted at the station and that the charge should not be more than Id.
