LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT* WELLINGTON, Monday. The Department of Agriculture. ha£ received the following cablegram, dated May 4, frdm the High Commissioner:—. The spot market for tallow is very quiet, and only a little business is doing for shipment. Present quotations for spot are, per cwt-: Mutton, fine, 42s Gd to 435; fair to good, 40s to 425; dark to dull, 37s to 37s Gd. Beef, sweet and or mixed, 41s to 435; fair to good, 38s to 41s; dark to dull, 3Gs 6d to 37s Gd; mixed fair to good, 38s to 40s Gd; dark to dull, 36s Gd to 375;

gut, etc., 35s 6d to 37s 3d. Fruit. —The Hororata is finishing discharging her apples, which generally are in good condition. Cox’s orange Pippin appear fairly free from pit, but some wasty Jonathans and Delicious are rather poor in colour, as in previous boats. Slack packing caused complaints. Pears: Comice in boxes are marked and bruised, and all are being repacked. • Other sorts are sound, except Bcurre Bose, in which there is a little waste. Prices were: Cox’s Orange ' Pippin, 15s to 20s per case; Jonathans, Delicious and Cleopatra, 13s to JGs; Lord Wolsey and Dunn’s Favourite. 12s to 15s; Adams, Permain and Parlin Beauty, 12s to 14s. Comice pears: A few were sold at 10s to 13s, | single trays, 13s to IGs double; Packham, Gs to Gs Gd single trays; Beurre Bose, Gs to 7s Gd single; Vicar of Wakefield, 3s Gd single,- Gs double. Hemp.—The Manila market is steady. “J” grade, May-July shipment, is quoted at £3G 10s sellers. The sisal market has declined. No. 1 fair average quality •sold at £36-10s; No. 2. £35 10s, with sellers over. The New Zealand market is dull and idle. Nominal closing comparative values were: —Highpoints, £32 10s; fair, £3O 10s; common, £29; rejected, £27. Tow, second grade, £2l; third grade, £lB. j Wool.—The sales continue with competition active. The opening rates were maintained for medium crossbred and coarse crossbred, but there were many withdrawals in the finer grades. Oats.—The market is guiet. English choice white feed is worth about 30s. Plate for May shipment is offered at 235. Chilian afloat is worth 235. Nominal value for New Zealand A grade Cartons for May shipment is 30s GdPeas.—There is a little better demand for maple. Sales are repotted of No. 1 New Zealand partridge for MayJune shipment to Lyttelton at GOs. Sellers now ask Gls without business. Blues: Dutch is plentiful and there is no inquiry for colonial. A grade Tasmanian is offered at £lB. Beans-—Very few English are available, the best winter sorts making up to 545; spring, 57s Gd. Chinese horse was sold for July-September shipment at £9 15s to Glasgow. Danish cocksfoot stocks arc reported to be very small. The present value, c.i.f. New Zealand, is 755.

MATIERE STOCK SALE. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their annual bullock and steer sale at Maliere, when about 300 head of cattle came forward to a good attendance. Buyers were present from Taihapo, Taumarunui, To Kuili, and as far norlh as Hamilton. The hulk of (he yarding changed hands under the hammer, hut a few vendors were not prepared to meet the market. The quality of the cattle yarded was particularly good as far as the grown bul- | locks were concerned, but the younger cattle were of somewhat indifferent I quality. Quotations: Prime bullocks made £l3; just killablc 4£yr. bullocks, £lO lis to £ll 15s; very forward condilion 4}yr. steers, £lO to £lO 7s 6d; very forward conditioned 3£yr. steers £9 10s to £9 i 7s Gd; other Shorthorn 3Ayr...steers, £8 7s to £S 11s; mixed colour 21yr. Shorthorn steers, £6 16s; 18-months Shrthorn steers, £5 7s 6d lo £7 Is; mixed sex Polled Angus calves, £4 5s to £4 15s; Shorthorn steer calves, £3 Is to £3 15s; Shorthorn heifer calves, £2 14s to £2 17s; empty cows, fat, to £9; other store cows, £4 . 4s to £5 4s; run Shorthorn cows, running with bull, £4 8s to £6 10s; potter bulls, £3 3s to £5 7s 6d. j
