Mr Barry Coney, of Auckland, will judge the music section at the Palmerston North Competitions'. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, accompanied by Mrs McLeod, left Wellington by the Ruahine for a trip to England. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, M.L.C., will celebrate his 83rd birthday to-morrow. Born in Auckland in 1846, Sir Edwin has made his home there all his life. Grand Central Hotel guests include: Messrs. A. Hummings, J. Howett, W. Hearley (Wellington), G. Bowman, J. Wcnham and W. Misgrove (Auckland). Mr W. W. Massey, past president of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was yesterday made a life member of the association. Eulogistic references were made concerning his services. Mr Hector Bolitho, the New Zealand author and journalist, has been elected to the Council of the British Empire Academy, which was formed some time ago with Lord How’ard de Walden as chairman, to further the interests of Dominions’ artists, musicians, and writers in London.
