CHINA’S RIVAL FACTIONS
HOSTILITIES THREATENED. FORCES BEING MOBILISED. A “MAILED-FIST" REGIME. <uy Telegraph—Press Assn. —Oopyrliftit.) (Australian Press Association.) SHANGHAI, March 5. Hostilities are again threatened in this part of China as the culmination of almost a year’s disagreements between the Hankow and Nanking factions. The Nanking faction, which represents the recognised Nationalist Government, is mobilising a large force in anticipation of attacks from the Hankow forces. Numerous Chinese merchant vessels at Shanghai and in the vicinity have been forcibly commandeered. This has inflicted enormous losses on the shipping companies whicli own them. Several gunboats controlled by the Nanking authorities have left Shanghai en route to the Lower Yanglsc fiver. The refusal by local money changers to accept notes of the Central Bank of China to-day, is regarded as significant of impending trouble. The downfall of the Nationalist Government, which unceasingly has bled the people and imposed a “mailed list” regime, would not be unwelcome in many quarters.
